Ratooning — letting the old cane stubble regrow instead of replanting — can save a season's worth of planting cost. Here's how to manage a ratoon crop properly, and how to know when it's time to stop ratooning and replant.

After the main sugarcane crop is harvested, the stubble left behind in the soil doesn't have to be dug up and replanted — it can be encouraged to sprout again into a fresh crop, called a ratoon. Done well, ratooning saves the considerable cost and time of land preparation and fresh planting material, and can give a harvest almost as good as the original crop. Done carelessly, it gives you a thin, weak, weed-choked field that barely pays back the input cost. The difference is almost entirely in how the ratoon is managed in its first 60 days.

What ratooning actually is, and why farmers do it

A ratoon crop grows from the stubble (the cut stump and root system) of the previous cane crop, rather than from freshly planted setts (cane cuttings). Because the root system and much of the plant's structure is already established, a ratoon crop matures faster and needs far less investment in land preparation, seed cane, and planting labour than a fresh (plant) crop.

This is why ratooning is so widely practiced: for many farmers, a well-managed ratoon can cost a fraction of what a fresh plant crop costs to establish, while still delivering a meaningful harvest. The savings compound if you can successfully ratoon more than once from the same planting.

What yield to actually expect from a ratoon

Be realistic: a ratoon crop typically yields somewhat less than the original plant crop, and each successive ratoon (first ratoon, second ratoon, and so on) tends to yield a bit less than the one before it, as the stubble's vigour gradually declines. A well-managed first ratoon can still come close to plant-crop yields, but the gap widens with each additional cycle. This is normal and expected — the goal of good ratoon management is to slow that decline, not eliminate it entirely.

Stubble shaving: the first job after harvest

Within a few days of harvesting the main crop — the sooner the better — shave the old stubble close to the ground with a sharp blade or a stubble shaver. This removes the older, drying stump tissue and encourages fresh, vigorous buds to sprout from healthy tissue closer to the soil, rather than weak shoots pushing up through dead stubble. Skipping this step, or doing it late, is one of the most common reasons a ratoon crop starts weak and never fully catches up.

Right after shaving, lightly break up the soil between rows (inter-row tillage) to loosen any compaction from harvest traffic and improve aeration for the new roots.

Gap filling: don't leave a thin stand

Walk the field about 15-20 days after shaving and identify any gaps where stubble has failed to sprout — this happens naturally in patches due to uneven stubble health, waterlogging, or pest damage. Fill these gaps promptly with fresh sett plantings (using healthy planting material from the same or a similar-maturity variety) so the final plant population is even across the field. A ratoon crop with large unfilled gaps loses yield in exact proportion to the gap area, and weeds move into those gaps quickly if you don't.

Feeding a ratoon: why it needs more nitrogen

A ratoon crop generally needs a higher nitrogen dose than the plant crop it followed — often noticeably more — because the stubble's own reserves are already partly depleted from producing the previous harvest, and the new shoots need extra nitrogen early to establish vigorous growth quickly. Apply this higher nitrogen dose in split doses rather than all at once: a substantial early dose soon after gap filling to drive fresh tillering, and a follow-up dose about 6-8 weeks later to sustain growth through the tillering-to-elongation phase.

Phosphorus and potash requirements are closer to the plant crop's needs and are best guided by a soil test, since ratoon fields often carry different residual nutrient levels than a field being planted fresh.

Irrigation scheduling for a ratoon

A ratoon crop is often more vulnerable to moisture stress in its first few weeks than a plant crop, simply because its root system, while established, has just been disturbed by harvest, shaving, and inter-row tillage. Irrigate promptly after shaving and gap filling to help fresh shoots establish, then follow a regular schedule through the tillering and grand growth phases, tapering off as the crop approaches maturity, similar to the plant crop's irrigation pattern but with slightly closer attention in the establishment weeks.

Watch for early shoot borer

Ratoon crops are particularly prone to early shoot borer damage, since the young, tender shoots emerging from stubble are an easy target. Look for the classic symptom: a central shoot that wilts and dries (a 'dead heart', similar in appearance to stem-borer damage in other cereal crops), often with a small visible entry hole near the base. Scout regularly in the first 6-8 weeks after shaving, remove and destroy affected shoots (the borer larva is usually still inside), and keep the field free of old crop residue, which harbours the pest between seasons.

Knowing when to stop ratooning and replant

Ratooning is only worthwhile while the stubble still has enough vigour to give a yield that justifies skipping fresh planting. In practice, most farmers ratoon once, and sometimes twice, before the decline in yield, plant population, and stubble health makes a fresh plant crop the more profitable choice. Signs it's time to stop include: yield dropping noticeably below what a fresh crop would give, persistent large gaps that gap-filling can't keep up with, and stubble that visibly struggles to sprout evenly even with good management. Pushing a third or fourth ratoon out of tired stubble usually costs more in inputs, relative to what it yields, than simply replanting.
