Heat wave: keep the soil covered and the crop cool

Heat damages a crop two ways at once — it pulls moisture out of the leaves faster than the roots can replace it, and it can outright kill flowers and pollen on the hottest days, which is why heat during flowering (not just heat in general) is usually the real yield-killer. Both of these have cheap countermeasures.

Mulching is the single most useful thing you can do before a heat spike arrives. A layer of straw, crop residue, dry leaves or even weeded-out grass laid over the soil around the plant base cuts soil temperature and slows evaporation, so the same irrigation water lasts longer and the root zone stays cooler.
