How mandi prices actually work — MSP, APMC, eNAM explained
Why MSP doesn't always reach you, how APMC mandis price your produce, and what eNAM has changed for small farmers.
Three letters that decide what your harvest pays — MSP, APMC, eNAM. Most farmers know the words. Few farmers know the gaps between them, where most of the lost income hides.
MSP — what it is, what it isn't
Minimum Support Price is the floor government promises for ~23 crops. The catch: it's only enforced where government actively procures (mostly wheat, paddy, and limited regions for others). For most cotton farmers, MSP is a reference, not a guarantee.
Check FCI and state procurement schedules early in the season. If your crop and region are covered, MSP procurement is usually the highest-value sale you'll make.
APMC mandi — the real journey of a quintal
Your produce arrives at the APMC, gets weighed, graded, and put up for open auction. Licensed traders bid. The highest bidder wins. APMC commission, hamali, and transport come off the top — typically 6-10% in total.
Two big losses hide here: bad grading (your A-grade gets called B), and weak auction (one or two big traders syndicating low bids). Both are reduced by going on a high-volume day and by knowing your true grade.
eNAM — what it changed
eNAM links 1,400+ APMCs into one online auction floor. A trader in Indore can bid on your cotton in Junagadh. For non-perishable produce — pulses, oilseeds, cotton — this can lift your realised price 3-7%.
It needs an APMC linked to eNAM, an assayed lot, and your trader registration. If your taluka APMC isn't on eNAM yet, push your local FPO or sanstha to get it onboarded.
How to time your sale
Track prices for 3 weeks before harvest. In most years prices dip 8-15% in the 2 weeks right after major harvest, and recover over the next 4-6 weeks as supply tapers. If you can hold for 3-4 weeks with safe storage, you usually beat the post-harvest dip.
Don't time blindly — track your specific commodity at your specific mandi. Khetiyaar's Bazar tab shows nearby APMC prices.
