7 government schemes every Indian farmer should know in 2026
PM-KISAN, PMFBY, KCC, eNAM, Soil Health Card, PMKSY, FPO. What each one actually pays, who qualifies, how to apply.

Most Indian farmers know two or three schemes well. There are seven that matter — and combined, they can shift a small holding's economics decisively.
Direct income — PM-KISAN
₹6,000 a year, paid in three installments of ₹2,000, directly to your Aadhaar-linked account. Eligibility: any landholding farmer family — small, marginal, or large — with valid land records. Excludes income tax payers and government employees.
Apply once at your CSC or pmkisan.gov.in. Re-eKYC every year keeps payouts flowing. If you missed an installment, check the portal — backlogs are paid retroactively if eKYC is current.
Insurance — PMFBY
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana covers your sown crop against drought, flood, hail, fire, pests, and untimely rain. Premium: 1.5-2% for kharif/rabi; 5% for horticulture. Government pays the rest.
Critical: enroll within the cut-off (usually 1 month before sowing window closes). If you miss the window, no claim — even after a real disaster.
Credit — Kisan Credit Card (KCC)
KCC gives you a working capital loan up to ₹3 lakh at 4% effective interest (after government interest subvention) when repaid on time. Use it for seeds, fertilizer, pesticide, labour, machinery rental.
Visit your nearest scheduled bank with land records, Aadhaar, photo. Approval typically takes 14 days. KCC also doubles as a debit card at most banks.
Markets — eNAM
eNAM is a national online mandi linking 1,400+ APMCs. You can list your produce, get bids from buyers across states, and avoid middlemen. Quality grading is done at the mandi gate.
Best for non-perishable produce — pulses, oilseeds, cotton — where the price difference between regions is meaningful.
Inputs and water — Soil Health Card and PMKSY
Soil Health Card is free testing every 2 years. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana subsidizes drip and sprinkler systems at 55-75% for small/marginal farmers.
Combine: SHC tells you what your soil needs, PMKSY pays for the irrigation that delivers it efficiently.
For groups — FPO scheme
Forming a Farmer Producer Organization gets you a 3-year operational support package — up to ₹18 lakh — plus matching equity grants. Best for villages with 100+ farmers willing to aggregate.
Look up the SFAC and NABARD portals or the '10,000 FPO' scheme for current onboarding.
